Gustavo Figueroa Cantillo manages Lusitania, a farm at 1460 masl in Garzón, Huila. The farm occupies 60 hectares, 35 of which are dedicated to coffee and planted with around 200,000 Castillo trees. This is a very large farm by Colombian standards, with producers in this region typically working just 2-3 hectares. Coffee on Lusitania is harvested manually by a team of 40 pickers. This lot underwent a controlled fermentation in closed stainless steel tanks, then was dried in a mechanical silo to ensure consistency and uniform moisture.
Gustavo is an active member of Coocentral, the main cooperative in Central Huila. He is one of nearly 4000 members, around half of whom are active contributors. Their collective focus is to enhance the livelihoods of farmers and the quality of their crops by providing technical assistance, training, and quality improvement programs. Since 2005, Coocentral has invested early 3 million USD in social initiatives, including support with housing, education, healthcare and insurance.
